Abraham
The Father of the Jews
Abraham, originally named Abram, stands as one of the most significant figures in the King James Bible, revered as the father of faith and the patriarch of Israel. His life, recorded in Genesis, is a testimony of obedience, trust, and God’s covenant promises that extend through generations.
Abram was born in Ur of the Chaldees, a city steeped in idolatry. God called him to leave his homeland and kindred to journey to a land He would show him (Genesis 12:1). By faith, Abram obeyed, setting out with his wife Sarai, his nephew Lot, and their possessions. God promised to make of him a great nation, to bless him, and that in him all families of the earth would be blessed.
Throughout his journey, Abraham encountered trials that tested his faith. A famine led him to Egypt, where he wavered by presenting Sarai as his sister, fearing for his life. Yet God preserved them, showing His faithfulness despite Abraham’s weakness. Later, strife arose between the herdsmen of Abram and Lot, leading Abram to magnanimously give Lot the first choice of land. Lot chose the fertile plain of Jordan near Sodom, while Abram dwelt in Canaan. Afterward, God reaffirmed His covenant, promising Abram descendants as numerous as the dust of the earth.
One of Abraham’s most memorable acts was his rescue of Lot after foreign kings captured him. Abram gathered trained servants, pursued the invaders, and recovered Lot, his goods, and the captives. On his return, he was blessed by Melchizedek, king of Salem and priest of the most high God, to whom Abram gave a tenth of all. This encounter foreshadowed Christ’s eternal priesthood.
Despite God’s promises, Abram and Sarai remained childless. Sarai, doubting, urged Abram to take her maid Hagar as a wife. Hagar bore Ishmael, but God made clear that the covenant would not be established through Ishmael, but through a son yet to come. In Genesis 17, God changed Abram’s name to Abraham, meaning “father of many nations,” and Sarai’s name to Sarah. He established the covenant of circumcision as a sign of His promises.
When Abraham was 100 years old, Sarah miraculously gave birth to Isaac, the son of promise. This child marked the fulfillment of God’s word, showing that nothing is too hard for the Lord.
Abraham’s faith was tested supremely when God commanded him to offer Isaac as a burnt offering on Mount Moriah. In obedience, Abraham took his son to the altar, raising the knife in surrender to God’s will. Yet the angel of the Lord intervened, sparing Isaac and providing a ram as a substitute. This act of faith illustrated Abraham’s trust in God’s power to even raise the dead (Hebrews 11:19) and foreshadowed the sacrifice of Christ, the Lamb of God.
Abraham also showed faith in his dealings with others. He interceded for Sodom and Gomorrah, pleading with God to spare the cities for the sake of the righteous. Though the cities were destroyed, Lot and his daughters were delivered, showing God’s mercy. Abraham’s hospitality was also notable, as he welcomed three visitors, one of whom was the Lord, who reaffirmed Sarah’s coming child.
At the end of his life, Abraham secured a burial place for Sarah in the cave of Machpelah, affirming his faith in God’s promise of the land. He arranged for Isaac’s marriage to Rebekah, ensuring the continuation of God’s covenant people. Abraham lived 175 years and was buried by Isaac and Ishmael.
Abraham’s legacy is profound. In the New Testament, he is praised as the father of faith. Romans 4 declares that Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness. He is the example of justification by faith, not by works. Through his seed, Jesus Christ, the ultimate blessing for all nations came to pass.
Abraham’s life, recorded in the King James Bible, reveals a journey of faith tested, refined, and rewarded. He is remembered as the friend of God, a man who trusted in God’s promises, and the father of all who believe.
