Lot

The Worldly Christian

The life of Lot, Abraham’s nephew, is one of the most sobering accounts in the King James Bible. Though considered a righteous man by Scripture, Lot is remembered as the picture of a “worldly Christian”—a believer whose love for the world led to compromise, sorrow, and great loss. His story stands as both a warning and a lesson for all who would walk with God.

Lot first appears in Genesis 11, when his grandfather Terah departed with Abram (later Abraham) from Ur of the Chaldees to go into the land of Canaan. After Terah’s death, Abram journeyed on with Lot at his side (Genesis 12:4–5). For a time, Lot shared in Abraham’s blessings and prosperity. Both men grew wealthy, and their herds and flocks increased greatly. But strife soon arose between their herdsmen, and Abraham, desiring peace, proposed that they separate. He graciously allowed Lot to choose whichever land he desired (Genesis 13:8–9).

Here the character of Lot began to show. Instead of deferring to Abraham, Lot lifted up his eyes and chose the well-watered plain of Jordan, which the Bible describes as being “like the garden of the LORD, like the land of Egypt” (Genesis 13:10). His choice was based on appearance, not on spiritual discernment. The land seemed fruitful, but it brought him near to Sodom, a city known for its wickedness. Genesis 13:13 declares, “But the men of Sodom were wicked and sinners before the LORD exceedingly.” Lot pitched his tent toward Sodom, and before long he dwelt in the city itself.

Though Lot was a believer, he became entangled with the world. He sat in the gate of Sodom, a place of influence and authority (Genesis 19:1). Yet his testimony carried little weight. When he warned his sons-in-law of God’s coming judgment, they mocked him as one that “seemed as one that mocked unto his sons in law” (Genesis 19:14). His compromise had cost him spiritual credibility.

God, in His mercy, did not forget Lot. When judgment fell on Sodom and Gomorrah, two angels came to deliver him and his family. They urged Lot to flee, but he lingered, reluctant to leave behind the life he had built (Genesis 19:16). The angels had to take him by the hand and lead him out. Even then, Lot bargained with them, requesting to flee to a small city rather than to the mountains (Genesis 19:20).

Lot’s worldly heart bore bitter fruit. His wife, whose heart longed for Sodom, looked back and was turned into a pillar of salt (Genesis 19:26). His daughters, corrupted by the atmosphere of Sodom, later committed grievous sin with their father, producing children who became enemies of Israel—the Moabites and Ammonites (Genesis 19:36–38). Though Lot’s life was spared, his legacy was marred with shame and sorrow.

The New Testament offers a striking commentary on Lot. In 2 Peter 2:7–8, he is called “just Lot, vexed with the filthy conversation of the wicked: (For that righteous man dwelling among them, in seeing and hearing, vexed his righteous soul from day to day with their unlawful deeds).” Lot was indeed a believer, but one who lived in compromise. His soul was grieved by the sin around him, yet he chose to remain entangled in it.

Lot’s story teaches us that it is possible to be saved, yet lose much through worldliness. He lost his home, his possessions, his testimony, his wife, and his peace. By contrast, Abraham, who walked by faith, gained the promises of God and became the friend of God.

The lesson of Lot is clear: love not the world, neither the things that are in the world (1 John 2:15). The worldly Christian may escape as by fire, but his life will bear little fruit and much regret. Lot reminds us that where we pitch our tent determines much about our future.
