Gideon
The Mighty Man of Valor
Gideon, also known as Jerubbaal, is one of the most memorable judges of Israel in the Old Testament. His story, found in Judges chapters 6–8, highlights God’s power working through a humble and hesitant man to deliver His people from oppression. Gideon’s journey illustrates themes of faith, obedience, weakness, and victory that remain significant in understanding God’s dealings with His people.
At the time of Gideon, Israel was suffering under the cruel domination of the Midianites. For seven years, the Midianites invaded their land, destroyed crops, and left the people impoverished. Out of desperation, Israel cried unto the LORD for deliverance. In response, God called Gideon, a man from the tribe of Manasseh, who was threshing wheat in secret to hide it from the enemy.
The angel of the LORD appeared to Gideon and greeted him with the words: “The LORD is with thee, thou mighty man of valour” (Judges 6:12). Gideon, however, doubted both himself and God’s presence, questioning why Israel was suffering if the LORD was truly with them. The angel assured him that God had chosen him to save Israel. Gideon protested his weakness and low status, but God declared, “Surely I will be with thee, and thou shalt smite the Midianites as one man” (Judges 6:16).
Struggling with doubt, Gideon asked for signs. First, he prepared a sacrifice of meat and unleavened cakes, which the angel touched with a staff, causing fire to consume it. Later, Gideon sought further confirmation through the famous fleece tests. He laid a fleece of wool on the threshing floor, asking that dew fall only on the fleece while the ground remained dry. God granted this request. Then, to be certain, Gideon reversed the test, asking that the fleece remain dry while the ground was wet with dew. God again confirmed His call.
Gathering an army of 32,000 men, Gideon prepared to face the Midianites. But God told him the army was too large, lest Israel claim victory by their own strength. First, 22,000 fearful men were dismissed, leaving 10,000. Still too many, God instructed Gideon to observe how the men drank water. Those who lapped water with their hands to their mouths were chosen—only 300 men. This drastic reduction ensured the victory would clearly be attributed to the LORD.
On the eve of battle, God encouraged Gideon by sending him to overhear a Midianite soldier recounting a dream that symbolized Israel’s victory. Strengthened in faith, Gideon divided his 300 men into three groups. Armed with trumpets, empty pitchers, and torches hidden inside, they surrounded the Midianite camp at night. At Gideon’s signal, they blew the trumpets, broke the pitchers, and shouted, “The sword of the LORD, and of Gideon!” Panic spread through the Midianites, who turned their swords against each other and fled. Israel pursued them, and their oppressors were defeated.
After the victory, Israel wanted Gideon to rule over them as king. He refused, declaring, “The LORD shall rule over you” (Judges 8:23). Nevertheless, Gideon accepted gold from the spoils and made an ephod, which unfortunately became a snare to Israel, leading them into idolatry.
Gideon lived in peace for the rest of his life, and Israel enjoyed forty years of rest under his leadership. Yet after his death, the people quickly turned again to false gods, forgetting the LORD who had delivered them.
Gideon’s story in the King James Bible is a powerful testimony of how God uses unlikely people to accomplish His purposes. Though Gideon was fearful and unsure, God proved His strength through him by delivering Israel with only 300 men. His life reminds us that victory comes not from human might but from trusting in the LORD. At the same time, Gideon’s later choices show the danger of misplaced devotion. Ultimately, Gideon stands as a symbol of God’s power working through human weakness.
