Hezekiah
The King of Survival
King Hezekiah of Judah, son of King Ahaz, is remembered in the King James Bible as one of the most faithful and reform-minded kings of the southern kingdom. His story appears mainly in 2 Kings 18–20, 2 Chronicles 29–32, and Isaiah 36–39. He reigned for 29 years in Jerusalem, beginning at the age of 25, and is described as a king who “did that which was right in the sight of the Lord, according to all that David his father did” (2 Kings 18:3).
Hezekiah’s reign is marked by a passionate devotion to the worship of the true God. Upon ascending the throne, he undertook bold religious reforms. He cleansed and reopened the Temple, which had been neglected under his father’s idolatrous rule, and restored the Levitical priesthood. He destroyed idols, including the bronze serpent Moses had made, which had become an object of misplaced worship. Hezekiah called the people of Judah and even remnants from Israel to return to the Lord and celebrate the Passover. This revival renewed faith and restored worship in the land.
Politically, Hezekiah faced enormous challenges. The Assyrian Empire, the dominant power of the era, threatened Judah. King Sennacherib of Assyria invaded and captured many fortified cities of Judah. Hezekiah initially sought peace by giving silver and gold, even stripping treasures from the Temple. Yet, when Sennacherib’s forces besieged Jerusalem and mocked the God of Israel, Hezekiah turned in prayer to the Lord. He spread Sennacherib’s threatening letter before God in the Temple, crying for deliverance.
God answered through the prophet Isaiah, assuring Hezekiah that Sennacherib would not enter the city. That very night, the angel of the Lord struck down 185,000 Assyrian soldiers, and Sennacherib returned to his own land in defeat (2 Kings 19:35–36). This miraculous deliverance confirmed God’s power and faithfulness, strengthening Judah’s confidence.
Hezekiah’s personal life also revealed God’s mercy. When he fell gravely ill, the prophet Isaiah told him to prepare for death. In great sorrow, Hezekiah prayed with tears, asking God to remember his faithfulness. The Lord heard his prayer and added fifteen more years to his life. As a sign of this promise, the shadow on the sundial of Ahaz went backward ten degrees, a miracle that demonstrated God’s control over time itself (2 Kings 20:1–11).
During his extended life, Hezekiah received envoys from Babylon. Out of pride, he displayed all his treasures and resources to them. Isaiah warned that in the future, Babylon would carry away those very treasures, and Judah’s descendants would be captives. Though Hezekiah humbled himself afterward, this event foreshadowed Judah’s eventual exile.
Despite human failings, Hezekiah’s reign stands out for its spiritual zeal, courage, and reliance on God. Scripture records that he trusted in the Lord like no king of Judah before or after him. He prospered in his works, building water systems, including the famous tunnel bringing water into Jerusalem, ensuring the city’s survival during sieges.
Hezekiah’s life offers enduring lessons in faith, prayer, humility, and reform. His leadership during times of crisis shows how seeking God can bring deliverance, even against overwhelming odds. He remains a powerful example of a king whose heart was devoted to God, earning him honor among the faithful leaders of Israel’s history.
